A good pre-requisite tutorial can be found here. It will provide you with introductory information regarding the Stator Data Layer file.
The release of Stator v2.## introduced new functionality which allows Stator to connect to Data Layer files in any location, this includes from a central server location or on your local hard drive.
The following configurations will give you some idea of the network configurations which are possible in order to operate and run Stator in a networked environment.
Configuration 1: Central Server Data Repository

The picture above shows a simple network configuration which you can use to operate Stator. The Data Layer file is located on the central server with all connecting computers running an instance of the Stator program.
For this configuration;
- All connected computers require Stator to be installed and configured to connect to (point to) the Data Layer which resides on the central server.
- Each connecting computer will require a license in order to run Stator.
- Laptops and other portable devices can also connect to the server Data Layer file so long as they are operating an instance of the Stator program.
- All Stator versions should be the same, i.e. PRO, Standard etc.
- All computers should have read/write access to the server location where the Data Layer is stored.
Configuration 2: Central Computer Data Repository

The configuration above is very similar to the server network however this time the Data Layer file is stored on a local computer. The other nodes in the network (two computers and laptop) can connect to the Data Layer file so long as the location where the Data Layer file is shared and visible to the other computers.
For this configuration;
- All connected computers require Stator to be installed and configured to connect to (point to) the Data Layer which resides on the central computer.
- Each computer will require a license in order to run Stator.
- Laptops and other portable devices can also connect to the computer Data Layer file so long as they are operating an instance of the Stator program.
- All Stator versions should be the same, i.e. PRO, Standard etc.
- All computers should have read/write access to the server location where the Data Layer is stored.
Configuration 3: Multiple Computers and Stator

The picture above shows a very popular configuration amongst users who like to operate both Stator on a desktop computer and a laptop. Although there is no need for a network in this configuration, data is synchronised by simply copying the Data Layer file between computers.
PLEASE NOTE:
Both computers require a license for Stator and the Data Layer file is the only file which contains portfolio information.
